Summer In the City Explorations

Our one and only big trip occurred right when school got out. So I have been faced with the task of filling our days of Summer with cheap or free, fun things to do. A lot of those things involve checking out our surroundings. Last Summer was so crazy with the move that we didn't get much chance to explore. Here is a sampling of the days when we do get out of the house.

At the very beginning of the Summer we went with a friend to the Zoo. It is up there with the Brookfield Zoo and the Lincoln Park Zoo as one of my favorites. The kids loved it.

My Mom came back with us from California and she did some creepy exploring by herself with us in tow. First was this old prison that looked like a castle that we both wanted to check out, but then I got cold feet when I realized I had kids in the car.

The second wasn't supposed to be creepy but ended up being creepy. We found a piano store that cleans up second hand pianos and some of the proceeds go to a charity and we were looking for a piano. I sent my Mom in and a lonely three flights of stairs later in an old industrial building, she found that it was closed but it was a little too eerily silent and she got out of there.

The sign was cool though and it was located in an area called the West Bottoms which host First Fridays where all of these antique stores open down there for (you guessed it) the first Friday of the month. It would be fun to go back and check it out when we aren't the only ones.

Another day, we had to take Ryan to work. I didn't want to waste a trip to the city so we checked out KC's Public Library and it was awesome. It's a great library and we have gone back since then a few more times. They have a museum there too that I would love to check out one time.

The entrance to the kids section.

We've gotten a lot of time in at Skate City as well. The kids are really working on their skating skills and I hope if the chance ever arrises they will win a skate off and use their skates to battle instead of their fists.

One day it wasn't too hot with death humidity so we went down to the children's farm. It is such a cute place to walk around and see all of the farm animals.

We had to get at least one Drive-In movie this Summer. They are my absolute favorite and I love that there are still places around so that my kids can experience the fun too. This Drive-In had a hill that kids liked to climb and it made for some cute pictures.

...And the pool. The pool hasn't got as much play as I had hoped. It's expensive and I should have gotten a pool pass at the beginning, but nothing beats a day at the pool. The kids of course love it and Kate took a chance at the high dive and then did it another six times.

I think we may survive this Summer. I keep thinking I need to enjoy it, because next Summer there will be four little ones to entertain. Maybe we should move to a farm and they can all get a bunch of chores for next Summer.
