I had a friend on Facebook that took her family to the Midewin Prairie a month earlier and it looked like a cool adventure. Mind you, she went before there was really a snowfall, so I'm sure it wasn't as nearly muddy and icy. One Saturday morning it was in the upper 40's and we needed to get out of the house, so we headed to the prairie. There used to be an Army Ammunition Plant on the land, it was eventually torn down and the land is now being run by the US Forest Service. There are a bunch of trails and one trail on the map said it led to some army bunkers but we didn't make it that far. We didn't plan that well and some of us weren't wearing the right shoes for cold and wet conditions, plus it was ccccold. I bet it is an awesome place in the spring and fall, especially with the flat land and the big skies.
